Howto Upgrade Macbook Pro 2011 15″ to use an SSD This video shows how to open up your MacBook Pro and switch out the hard drive. I upgraded my brand new (purchased 2/28/2012) late 2011 15″ i7 2.4ghz MacBook Pro recently with an SSD Drive as well as 16GB of CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Memory for Apple Model CMSA16GX3M2A1333C9. Running OSX Lion 10.7.3 this configuration can boot up in 10 seconds. It shuts down in 2 seconds as well! Loading in and out of programs is extremely fast and is demonstrated Final Cut Pro X. This program typically take forever to launch and manipulate on older machines, but the new i7 Macbook Pros perform very well! Wives tales suggest limitations on how much RAM the MacBook platforms will recognize. In this case all 16GB is recognized by the operating system unlike Apple’s notes that the max RAM they will sell is 8GB. I was able to successfully disable all hard drive swap files as well as hibernation / sleep mode saving additional hard drive space that those features take up. Around 10GB of drive space saved there. This MacBook Pro is a SATA III platform, and the drive supports SATA III speeds. This means the drive is future proof and will double in speed if you upgrade to a SATA III supporting model of MacBook Pro! TRIM support can be enabled in OSX Lion 10.7.x (this is NOT available in Snow Leopard) by following instructions after googling “trim enabler”. There is software out there that does it now, Apple enables it on it’s own
